I don't watch a lot of sports so my opinion may be off base, but thanking God for an outcome isn't necessarily about a religion. It's a default word for many. Just like universe, spirit, faith, etc. I was once told, when I struggled with the word God and ran through my list of reference words - just say God - it is about your understanding of what you are referring to, not ours.
